DHIFFUSHI POWER STATION

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) proudly announces the successful commissioning of a cutting-edge power generation facility on Dhiffushi, marking a transformative upgrade to the island’s energy infrastructure. Replacing an outdated utility plant, this modern complex represents a major leap in sustainable power generation and establishes a new corporate benchmark for project delivery speed in the Maldives. A Landmark in Rapid Energy Infrastructure Development The Dhiffushi powerhouse project is officially STELCO’s fastest-completed construction to date. Ground was broken on June 26, 2024, and the project reached completion ahead of schedule on April 30, 2025. The new 30,000-square-foot complex dramatically scales the island’s installable power output from 2.2 megawatts (MW) to a robust 7 MW, effectively tripling local energy capacity and securing ample reserve power to meet both current and future demand. Designed for Community Well-Being and Operational Excellence Direct resident feedback shaped the project’s community-first design. The strategic relocation of the plant away from residential neighborhoods eliminates previous concerns regarding noise pollution and smoke, harmonizing industrial operations with daily island life. The advanced infrastructure features a spacious engine room, a cutting-edge digital control room, and a dedicated customer service center. For efficient fuel logistics, the site integrates two high-capacity bulk storage tanks. Operational sustainability extends to the workforce. The complex includes a comprehensive staff accommodation block featuring two bedrooms, a kitchen, mess hall, recreation space, and a prayer room. By providing on-site housing, STELCO eliminates the high rental costs previously incurred for visiting technicians dispatched from Malé, ensuring rapid, cost-effective operational support. Powering the Next Phase of Dhiffushi’s Economic Growth This significant capacity enhancement safeguards the island’s long-term energy security. The upgraded grid reliably supports residential households and fuels the expansion of the local economy, critically underpinning the region’s thriving guesthouse tourism sector. With a tripled power supply, Dhiffushi is now fully equipped to accommodate business growth and increased visitor arrivals without energy constraints.

DHIFFUSHI DESALINATION PLANT

Ensuring a consistent supply of safe drinking water is a critical challenge for local islands in the Maldives. On the island of Dhiffushi, this challenge has been met with a state-of-the-art integrated water and sanitation system. Operated by Altec Maldives Pvt. Ltd., the Dhiffushi Water Operation Centre utilizes advanced Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology to convert seawater into fresh, piped potable water, serving the local community, guesthouses, and businesses around the clock. Infrastructure and Production Capacity Developed as a comprehensive utility project integrating water supply and sewerage disposal, the facility represents a total investment of $4 million USD. This significant community upgrade was made possible through donations from the Ali Fulhu Thuthu Foundation (AFTF) and the nearby Meeru Island Resort & Spa. Designed and installed by Altec Maldives—who built the pipelines, water storage tanks, and pumping stations—the system is built for reliability and future demand. While the operation center was originally equipped with two RO plants, it currently operates three units with a combined total production capacity exceeding 350 cubic meters per day (m³/day). A robust storage reserve underpins this production. The facility maintains two separate storage tanks with an 800 m³ capacity each, resulting in a total reserve of 1,600 m³. This ensures uninterrupted service across an extensive underground pipe network that spans over 7 kilometers, supplying more than 350 domestic and commercial customers. Project Execution and Technical Scope The initial installation phase established the system’s high standards. A key early contract involved the supply and installation of two RO plants, each with a production capacity of 60 m³/day, for a total of 120 m³/day. Completed in just 75 days at a value of MVR 2,843,800.00, the scope encompassed the complete technical fit-out, including a multimedia filter (MMF) system, feed pumps, bag filter filtration, transfer pumps, a degasifier, and feed tank installations. These components form the backbone of the pre-treatment and desalination process critical to the RO plants' efficient operation. Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship Beyond providing essential services, the Dhiffushi utility system is a benchmark for environmental responsibility. It operates under a permanent Utility Operations license from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and adheres to strict water quality standards monitored by the Utility Regulatory Authority (URA). The center’s green credentials are further enhanced by its co-location with a 40 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Co-funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Japan, this renewable energy source helps power operations, actively reducing the island's reliance on diesel-generated power and lowering the facility's overall carbon footprint. Operational Excellence and Community Impact The Dhiffushi Water Operation Centre stands as a critical piece of local infrastructure, guaranteeing that residents and visitors have continuous access to safe tap water. This project exemplifies how strategic partnerships between charitable foundations, the private sector, and international development bodies can deliver long-term, sustainable utility solutions for small island communities. For further details regarding the plant's current operational updates and island utility services, please reference the official Altec Maldives Dhiffushi Water Operation Centre project overview.
